The title image is a Ron Cob concept design of the space jockey before Giger was brought onboard.

During ALIEN's pre-production, the two main artist's were Chris Foss and Ron Cobb.

They were tasked with designing certain elements of O'Bannon and Ron Shussets script. They didn't have Giger at that point so they got Ron and Chris to come up with some concepts for the space jockey.

O'Bannon showed Ridley, Giger's Necronomicon when they were struggling to come up with a decent design for the alien.

There were two Giger designs in particular which Ridley settled on for both the alien and the space jockey.

Obviously, we know that they settled on Giger's Necronom 4 to be the basis for the alien.

Ridley saw Giger's Necronom 5 and decided that one of the creatures in that piece is what he wanted the Jockey to be like:

Giger's Necronom 5:

Ridley's Storyboard for the Jockey:

This is what Ridley chose and he asked Giger to do another design based on the necronom 5 for the space jockey and another design for the Necronom 4 for the alien.

The poster was good though!

I've just read the OP again and I do apologise. I read it wrong.

Yes, I believe there was supposed to be a space jockey near the derelict that the Kane, Lambert and Dallas pass just before they reach the derelict.

Apparently, ASH notices it in the monitor via one of the crews headcams. I believe it was cut from the film.

It's probably collecting dust somewhere in FOX's vast library of unused footage.

The poster was good though!

Yes I remember Ridley talking about this as well as the Pyramid scenes and his disappointment regarding budget restrictions. What a shame. I can only imagine how incredible these extra Giger inspired scenes would have been.

Having two separate trips - one to the derelict and one to the ship would've been slow and a bit redundant.

The mention of a Jockey "fused" into the rock of LV-426 as well as the look of the Jockey "fused" into the chair (almost look as if it melted) suggests to me perhaps there was a massive explosion or release of fire which fused the Engineers in their suits to their surroundings? Probably when the Derelict initially crashed on LV-426.

I would've loved to see this scene in Alien as yet another subtle clue. Very interesting!

An explosion...Very very interesting! It would explain the deterioration between PROMETHEUS and ALIEN's Space Jockey. I think you're right!

STRANGE SHAPES ~ ROCK JOCKEY

Though the idea of the Jockey’s outdoor appearance was on the cards for several months its design never amounted to more than some sketches and doodles (though one can be spied in Giger’s ‘Alien Landscape’ painting – if you look for it).

For many years fans theorised that an actual prop was built and photographed. The rumour emerged in 1979 after a Topps trading card depicting a ‘grotesque rock formation’ was released, and many peregrine-eyed fans thought they could spy the shape of the Jockey in there somewhere.

Unfortunately for them, the rock formation was simply that, and nothing more – but the trade-off was ultimately worth it, considering that the rock Jockey’s excision meant that he could make a far more memorable appearance within his cockpit.

Yes i thought as much...

Alien was going to be based more off Star Beast, it had evolved the draft a bit... but then the script was revised over and over and worked on by Walter Hill and David Giler

So they may have tried to include like Star Beast had which was a dead giant being outside and then one in the pilot chair but the outside one was dropped.

There are other elements that had to be dropped too, such as separate Egg Chamber in a Pyramid/Temple Mound.

When looking at those Giger Paintings and then trying to fit it in with how maybe the Derelict had landed on a Alien world and was not from that place...

It conjures up two possibilities....

1) The Ship crashed and the landscape was somewhat living and had infected/evolved the ship....

2) The Ship crashed and its Cargo had evolved/infected the Moons Landscape..

This is based on watching Alien and looking at those pictures.... and not the full Franchise....

However Fire and Stone showed LV-223 becoming Evolved after a spillage of the Goo from the crashed Juggernaught and this could fit in with Alien i suppose.

This version with the giant skeleton found in the barren landscape sounds a lot like the alien fossil scene from Planet of the Vampires, which is often mentioned as a source of inspiration(meaning "shameless ripoff" here) for Alien. Even the looks of the cranium are pretty similar, just that this one has teeth instead of a proboscis.

Yes that movie has more than just one similarity to Alien Franchise.. includes Prometheus

@storm33

Exactly what I thought! Even the derelict ships are hinted in Planet of the Vampires!

S.M The deleted Engineer was located on the way to the Derelict within a rock over hang from memory. There were no plans for two trips. I think you may mean the pyramid being separate to the Derelict.

Yeah I know.  You were talking about the pyramid and budget restrictions (ie. cutting the pyramid and combining it into the derelict).

Oh yes. I see. I would love to see a very Gigeresque homage to this scene in Covenant.

@BigDave

Yes, there wasn't a prop made for the Rock Jockey, but they were going to dismember the Space Jockey set-piece for the scene.
