MemberOvomorphDec-20-2012 6:30 AMOn a recent viewing of our movie I was struck by a theme a single theme and 'alone' theme.
*We are introduced to singular Sacrificial Engineer.
*Shaw first appears as a solitary explorer fing another cave map(showing a solo Engineer pointing to thye stars)
*David seemingly the only awake crew member on the Prometheus
*ONe Beheaded Engineer that can't quite grasp tyhe new world he is shown in the lab
*The Last Engineer who is the only survivior at a installation filled with many buildings and ships
*Weyland who had the largest organization in the world..many emplayees no close friends and ultimately saw his life drifting away wiped out by his only created friend being used as a battery ram.
Our final scene shows Shaw last Human crew member with a anfroid seemingly the last creration of man traveling to the Engineer's world.
I couldn't help to think of Ripley heading back to earth alone with a xeno.
I think the theme is more about each entity being alone with themselves as they face each step of their life.
Not so much what challenge they face but how they respond to that challenge.

I would add
*the newborn deacon at the end. He (It?) is alone on the planet, a completely new life form with a very unknown future ahead.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

MemberOvomorphDec-20-2012 2:43 PMI am glad you mention this. Do you think the Deacon thinks he is anew lifeform? Does he think at all?
Since survivial seems to be the #1 concern of the xenos we have met what happens when the Deacon steps outside on the moon and finds it reallky barren.
Actually I think the Deacon's firtst moive is to head for Vickers' bar and slug down a vodka,,,up.

MemberOvomorphDec-20-2012 2:56 PMJohn, if I am to be completely honest, the first thing I thought when I posted my reply is that the deacon would head straight to the vodka (nutritional requirements), but I didn't mention it because I didn't want to hijack a serious thread (not yet, at least).
I have no clue how intelligent the deacon could be, or what degree of self consciousness or instinct comes from his genetic heritage (human and engineer), but the first time I saw it I saw a creature somehow less menacing than the original chestburster (although in a state much more advanced than larval).
Who knows, maybe in the sequel it will turn out to be the sweetest thing ever, and the additional set of jaws would be just to increase its smiling potential by 50%...

MemberOvomorphDec-20-2012 5:28 PMi think the Deacon would be less instinctive killer and more rational its DNA comprises of Human and Engineer which is actually the same DNA. i dont know if you include ressurection as canon but when xeno dna is mixed with human dna it tends to go with human characteristics like cloned ripley. but we didnt observe its behaviour so its just a guess

MemberChestbursterDec-20-2012 7:12 PMthis alone theme also works with engineers. we are looking for them, but they arent our allies. we arent even considered as equals by them. so it shows that we are alone in the universe. its us vs. everything
