Now that the film is released any thoughts on why Guy Pearce was slathered with prosthetics to make him appear old as opposed to having an older actor, of which there is a plethora that range from great to masters, play the part of old man weyland? I'm asking because it seems like his appearance seems to be kind of odd, listening to some fans and reviewers. Since it seems the movie focuses on his older days it would seem that they could get someone who is younger and known or unkown to play the younger version if needed at Ted Talks, etc. I have not seen the movie yet and after viewing might love the performance or realize that he will be back and explored as a major character in his younger days in Prometheus sequels (prequels) . Or he might indeed have found the fountain of youth he is seeking, ergo the prosthetics. As stated earlier, I don't want to know his fate, just thoughts on if his character will be revisited, or if Ridley just chose him based on his talent and acting abilities.

So you assuming that Prometheus 2 will show us young Weyland what a fuck. Why ? There is nothing that he can show us. We know he is dead. We know that his part in all of this doesn`t lead to anything.

What young version of Weyland.......cant recall that. Just the old man. So why not cast an older man?

well, if you have a young version of Weyland, the best way to make an older version of him is to have the same actor.

His part in the movie was irrelevant. And yes it was odd to see Pierce with lame makeup to play old Weyland.

I have to agree, the makeup looked poor and odd.

maybe he was picked with a longer story arc in mind and more films , just a thought :)

1st time poster, long time lurker. I have to agree with Private above. I have not seen the movie yet. But, my guess is that Guy was chosen because of a sequel. In the original Aliens script or book (I don't remember right now), Weylan industries receives some type of contact from what is now The Engineers. The Eng. tell Weylan that there is something important to find on LV246. Weylan implants Ash at the last moment (that's in the Alien movie dialog) as the science officer. Ash's secret mission is to ensure that the ship goes to LV 246 and bring a possible bioweapon back. So, I think the sequel to Prometheus may have Guy Pearse playing a younger Welan. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks, for input guys/gals. @David 1 people have a lot of leeway when their characters age in film, and when we age to the degree that Weyland did I don't think it would be hard to find a competent younger actor to play the part of say a Ben Kingsley, Malcolm McDowell. Michael Caine, Anthony Hopkins, etc. Not knocking the film, it's just seems that prosthetics tend to take away by the very nature of knowing that prosthetics were used. An exception to the rule seemed to be Benjamin Buttons for some reason, I loved the believability factor when Brad Pitt played that part, he connected and the older Benjamin did not look like Brad Pitt playing an old man, he just seemed to be an old man, not brad Pitt. I'm sure Ridley has his reasons and thought that maybe Tyrell Corporation, Yutani, or an earlier version of Sir Weylend might come into play in the future.

@Xenotron, Clint face was my first thought of Weyland and I didn't post his name! Funny.

my friend came out of the film and said 'why didn't guy pearce rejuvinate? why cast him if he wasn't going to?' as i said to her, that was the whole point - we assumed he was going to. RS played a trick on us by doing so. on purpose.

Using that logic to throw us makes sense if that is the case. Can't wait to see movie on the 13th at the Brenden theater at the Palms Casino in Vegas. If anyone is in Vegas or know about their IMAX 3d let me know if I picked the right theater and if I should sit dead center or 2/3's of the way up dead center!

You seem to forget the type of film this is. Weyland could easily be back. He's one of the more interesting characters in the film. I would like to see more of him. The makeup was fantastic. He looked fragile & desperate. I loved the mirror of him & the engineer. Both had woken from long sleeps & both were corrupted. Fantastic.
