So, those star maps that Shaw & Holloway find at ancient sites on Earth, how do we explain them? Did ancient peoples have contact with the Engineer/SJ race? Did they witness an event in that part of the sky? (SJ console launching something nasty their way? Maybe an extinction event?) Are they some kind of "genetic memory" of where all life on earth comes from? (42!) Were the star maps fakes -- planted by Weyland to justify the Prometheus Project for whatever reason? (And if so, why??) Did the individual SJ we actually see in Prometheus travel back in time somehow to "bring fire" to these ancient peoples, pointing the way toward his/her "home" planet? Is that the deal with the blue guy in the stream/waterfall on an apparently empty planet? Did the Engineers/SJs land on Earth early in its history, remain there until life evolved to a certain point (namely, intelligent humanoids at the dawn of civilization), perhaps directing said evolution, and then communicate with their "children"? Why provide the star maps, anyway? Why an "invitation"? When Shaw says, "We were wrong," is she saying that the invites were really a warning? Or something more complex?

RE : "Were the star maps fakes -- planted by Weyland to justify the Prometheus Project for whatever reason? (And if so, why??)" Good question. I was trying to Google some of those images, star-maps of Mesopotamian origin, and guess what I found? Nothing. Nothing showing a similar star layout as shown in Prometheus. I don't recall trying to find the Magdelanian or Mesoamerican ones, though; Mesopotamia interested me further since the area includes Sumer. Point is that I found nothing on Google, so what if Weyland set up those relics?

I don't think, based on what I can see of the star maps in the previews, that they are fakes...nor are they the mere speculations of ancient people. If you look closely at each image, there is a central, large human(oid) figure gesturing or pointing to the star system. This meshes rather nicely with what Shaw was saying. It does imply that there was some special being...a "king" so to speak...that came from another place, another planet, and had contact with ancient people. She should take a little more time to notice that this "king" is always surrounded by worshipful, and decidedly smaller, people...all of whom appear to be waiting in line. In line for what? Answering that question will probably lead headlong into the bulk of the film's horrors.

It's possible that the gods changed their minds concerning the invitation to go find them. Or maybe they just felt like screwing us over with some cheap trick, like say they invite us to their planet and we get killed and they're like "Fell for it! Ha-ha!" I'm getting tired now.

@CrazyDave55811 Why would you expect to find these star maps anywhere and why is the fact that you would not somehow surprising or significant? This film is a work of Fiction.

Guys this is a movie..... We dont even know what planets are around Zeti Reticuli there may be no Ringed Planet like Saturn there may be loads, there may be a planet like Earth with beings at simular stages to mankind now. We dont know. Ancient Civilisations all had simular tales that do and can make some connections to the ancient astronaught theory.... But they dont all have a exact same star map depicted.... So those artifacts used in this movie have been slightly modified to give a plot to this movie.

You mean you tried to Google the paintings of ancient astronauts shown in the movie and they don't really exist? Oh my god! Are you suggesting that Prometheus might be... fictional in some way? PLOT WAS PILLAGED FROM 2002 HIDDEN RECORDS AUTHOR THE STAR MAP CLAIM AND HUMAN ORIGIN CLAIM WITH IT IS REAL The writer has used the 2002 published works from author Wayne Herschel called The Hidden Records. Its all on line. Identical plot as far as there are real ancient star maps found in ancient sites. They do show human origins associated with it. Thats a complete copy of the authors work. Sadly to try and make it different some how, it was altered using different stars and evil alien agenda. There are now 35 accounts of ancient star maps on line found all around the world that the author found show three sun-like stars in Taurus near a star cluster M45 Pleiades. This repeating series of star maps has been on Coast to Coast radio too. Even if this authors work is no more than just a theory... They pillaged the plot.

"''This repeating series of star maps has been on Coast to Coast radio too.;;" I wouldn't use Coast to Coast rawdio as a source for real information. I recall them inflaming then fears of many humans when 1999 waqs changing to 2000. This radio show day after day had guests predicting the end of the world as we know it and we best prepare to live without all of thye creature comforts we have grown to love. As far as the star maps that idea seemed real enough and if had goofled I would have expected similar representations that Holloway presented on board the Prometheus, In looking over the map I don't think my first thought would be that they are an invitation. I didn't quite buy that the various star map cicilization didn't have contact with each other. To me that is just a minor error.

irt. abiogenesis: (love your name btw) The "Weyland planted the maps" scenario is unlikely. Remember, Weyland's got a huge stake in this expedition actually finding what it seeks. Which would make it silly of him to plant fake evidence, which he knows is fake. Maybe he has even better evidence available, but that would imply he might as well release (some of) that. The 'not an invitation; a warning' bit is something explored in fanfiction (by *cough* yours truly); I've no idea whether that was the intention of the creators; probably not. The film hints that ancient humans and Engineers communicated; that provided the key to reconstruct a possible language for David to use to read the doors, speak to the Engineer, understand the holograms. The language used in the film appears to be some version of Proto-Indo-European. 'Schleicher's fable', which David recites, is one linguist's guess as to how PIE sounded like. The fragment of speech when he asks the engineers, as far as I can tell, is PIE-like (there was some discussion about it on Language Log), but for obvious reasons, there are many opinions on what a 5000-year-old dead language sounds like. The suggestion that the Engineers communicated with Ancient Humans does not imply said communication to be 'legal'. It could, presumably, have been clandestine in some way, with either spying from the humans, betrayal from the Engineers, or a mix of both- if you want to speculate on more complicated scenarios. Or it could have been that the Engineers didn't much care for the apes that were staring at them. Who knows.
The whole point of this is lost if you keep it a secret.
